The topic for the December 2008 meeting was Darfur. It proved to be an interesting and informative meeting that helped people better understand the complex background that has resulted in a history of abductions and other human rights violations in this area. Two Sudanese ex-patriots spoke at some length about the history of the region. The country is divided along religious lines; primarily Arabic speaking Moslems and Christians. The Sudanese government in Kharoum supports the Janjaweed and other militias.
One issue that came to light was the effect of desertification of Sudan through climate change. This has caused the food and water pie to be smaller, and brought about fighting over this shrinking resource.
It was the opinion of some speakers that resolution of disputes and conflicts will not be helped by introducing foreign peacekeeping (peacemaking) forces. There are already large contingents of foreign forces in Sudan largely from countries that have interests in Sudan's resources (oil). Any resolution requires effective leadership from within Khartoum.
Time limits prevented an exhaustive discussion on many of the issues raised. Future meetings might focus on specific problems in the area.
